Closing puzzle: Indefinites in Maori (Chung and Ladusaw 2004)

چکیده

In chapter I, we advanced the idea that an indefinite noun phrase can be semantically combined as an argument to a predicate by two different modes of composition: Restrict and Specify. Restrict composes the property supplied by the indefinite with the predicate, limiting the semantic domain of the predicate but leaving it unsaturated. Specify shifts the property to an individual, which then saturates the predicate's argument, rendering the predicate (more) semantically complete. Although these operations often lead to results that are truth-conditionally equivalent, we believe that the difference in composition is linguistically significant. In particular, our theory of restriction and saturation makes an empirical prediction that we explore in this chapter. If indefinites and other semantically incomplete noun phrases can indeed be composed via different operations, then one might expect that the morphosyntax could explicitly reflect which composition operation is employed. A language could, for instance, use distinctive determiners or distinctive inflectional morphology to flag whether a given indefinite should be composed via Restrict or via Specify. We show here that this prediction is borne out in remarkable detail in Maori, a Polynesian languag of New Zealand. Maori has two articles, he and tetahi (plural etahi), that are widely recognized to be indefinite in some sense.1 These articles contrast, but not truth-conditionally, in sentences like the following (see appendix B for a list of abbreviations used in the Maori examples):

Negative Features on Negative Indefinites: Evidence from Split Scope

The assumption that negative indefinites are semantically non-negative elements associating with sentential negation has proven fruitful to account for the behaviour of negative indefinites in languages exhibiting negative concord. Under this view, negative indefinites carry a negative feature that has to be licensed by a semantic negation. This paper critically discusses and evaluates differen...

NPI licensing and beyond : Children ’ s knowledge of the semantics of any

This paper presents a study of preschool-aged children's knowledge of the semantics of the negative polarity item (NPI) any. NPIs like any differ in distribution from non-polarity-sensitive indefinites like a: any is restricted to downward-entailing linguistic environments (Fauconnier 1975, 1979; Ladusaw 1979). But any also differs from plain indefinites in its semantic contribution; any can qu...

Choice-functional Series of Indefinites and Hamblin Semantics

Haspelmath 1997 poses a challenge for current theories of indefinites. Extensive data from 40 languages show there are too many differences between indefinite pronoun series to account for with the usual machinery for indefinites. For instance, we can take Russian as an example: below are 4 main Russian indefinite pronoun series. There are at least 4 other series unlisted in (1), and Bylinina &...

Maori experience of community treatment orders in Otago, New Zealand.

OBJECTIVE To consider the impact of community treatment orders (CommTOs) on Maori patients and their whanau (extended family) and the associated views of mental health professionals. METHOD As a distinct aspect of a larger study of CommTOs, eight Maori patients under compulsory community care were interviewed and, where possible, members of their whanau. Associated interviews were held with t...

Absence of Case-matching Effects in Mongolian Sluicing

Synopsis: In this paper, we provide novel data on sluicing in the Khalkha dialect of Mongolian, and show that wh-remnants and their correlates do not have to match in case. We then argue that Mongolian sluicing is best analyzed by the LF-copy approach (Chung, Ladusaw & McCloskey 1995), where a sluiced clause consists of a wh-remnant base-generated in [Spec, CP] and an empty TP into which the an...
